Damage to slurry pipeline at Ambatovy nickel project: Incident report and response

Sumitomo Corporation has announced that the slurry pipeline at the Ambatovy Nickel Project in Madagascar was damaged on September 25, 2024, resulting in ore discharge. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

Through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Summit Ambatovy Mineral Resources Investment B.V., Sumitomo holds a 54.17% stake in the project companies, Ambatovy Minerals S.A. and Dynatec Madagascar S.A., which are based in Amsterdam and Antananarivo, respectively.

Currently, the slurry pipeline is shut down as investigations into the cause of the damage are underway. Authorities have been informed, and the company is assessing the extent of the damage, the recovery timeline, and the impact on operations.
