Critical Metals Corp recently reported significant drilling results from its Tanbreez rare earth deposit in southern Greenland, highlighting its growing importance in global efforts to diversify rare earth supply chains away from China. The Tanbreez deposit is estimated to contain 19 million tons of rare earth elements, including a high concentration of heavy rare earths such as dysprosium and terbium, which are vital for advanced technologies like electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.
The latest drilling results revealed an even more valuable aspect of the deposit: an exceptionally high concentration of gallium, a critical mineral used in the production of computer chips, solar panels, and LEDs. Gallium is predominantly produced as a byproduct of bauxite mining, and its strategic importance has soared, especially after China imposed export restrictions on the mineral in 2023, creating supply uncertainties.
Tony Sage, CEO of Critical Metals Corp, emphasized the deposit’s potential to attract substantial investments. The company is now focused on further exploration to assess the economic viability of mining operations and unlock the value of these critical resources.
Greenland, rich in natural resources, has become a focal point for Western nations seeking to reduce reliance on China for critical minerals. Recent visits by U.S. and European leaders underscore the growing geopolitical importance of Greenland’s resources. Beyond the Tanbreez project, other rare earth initiatives are also gaining momentum on the island, such as Neo Performance’s Sarfartoq project in the southwest. However, Australia’s Energy Transition Minerals is facing challenges with its Kvanefjeld project due to Greenland’s more stringent mining regulations introduced in 2021.
