Tanzania is positioning itself to become a key player in Africa’s strategic mineral sector, driven by a projected surge in global demand for critical resources by 2050. This was announced by Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde during a meeting with key industry stakeholders.

Mavunde highlighted Tanzania’s competitive advantage, citing its abundant reserves of minerals crucial for clean energy, including nickel, lithium and graphite. He noted that the global demand for graphite is currently 6.5 million tonnes annually, while production is at 1.2 million tonnes, with China dominating the market at 64%.

In Africa, Madagascar is the leading producer, contributing 13%, followed by Mozambique at 10%. Mavunde pointed out that Tanzania ranks third, contributing 0.6% to global graphite production.
